Best Reasons to Blog

blogComicSure, I get it – you’re old school.Blogging isn’t for you…you like the smell of old books and the feeling of the newspaper in your hands. You may not even know what a blog is!Maybe you think blogging is for egomaniacal teenagers trying to show off their latest adventures. Maybe you think blogging is for the lonely cat lady, computer nerd, or weird anti-government shut-in in your apartment building.
Blogging is that – and so much more.

But Wait- What the Heck is a Blog?

Good question! A blog, short for ‘weblog’, is basically a web page that hosts a series of ‘journal-like’ entries, usually about a particular subject. The entries themselves are relatively short, between 250 and 1000 words, and contain content that doesn’t go into too much depth about the subject matter.

Think of them as easy to read jumping-off points for a topic. Most blogs contain links, which give the reader the chance to easily find more in-depth information if they want it. The topic could be anything – a personal diary, your favorite band, a how-to [fill in the blank], a company newsletter – ANYTHING!

The main points to remember are that a blog is short, easy to read or scan, and updated regularly with fresh content. It will also almost certainly drive more traffic to your site.

    Keep it Short

Try to remember that a blog isn’t a novel- keep it short and sweet. Cut to the chase!

    Make it Easy to Read
Break up your content into small, easy to read chunks. Using lists is a great way to articulate your points quickly and easily, but I beg you:

  • Separate your content with headings and subheadings to make for easy scanning.
  • Don’t be afraid to use full sentences when you write your blog.
  • Remember to use proper punctuation and grammar.
  • Always, always, always check your spelling.
  • Remember that you don’t have to write that deeply about your topic, simply provide links if you would like to say more.
